Objective of the lesson plan is for students to successfully identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Create new Christmas songs by identifying nouns, adjectives, and verbs and replacing them with new ones. Students will create silly songs that will be performed to the class.

Parts of Speech Lesson Plan

Day 1

Teach a mini lesson on nouns to the class. Model how to identify nouns with a verse from a Christmas song that students will not use such as; Here Comes Santa Claus.

As a class identify all the nouns in the Christmas verse and underline or highlight.

Here comes Santa Claus!

Here comes Santa Claus!

Right down Santa Claus Lane!

Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer

are pulling on the reins.

Bells are ringing, children singing;

All is merry and bright.

Hang your stockings and say your prayers,

'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

List all the nouns on the blackboard or chart paper. With the class identify the number of syllables per noun.

Santa Claus: 3 syllables

Vixen: 2 syllables.

As a class, write the number of syllables beside each noun.

As a class, decide on new nouns for the highlighted nouns with the same amount of syllables. Write the new noun beside each original noun on the list.

Santa Claus has 3 syllables so it needs to be replaced with a noun with 3 syllables.

Santa Claus: Puppy Brown or Johnny Love

Place students into groups of 4 to 5. Each group of students will receive a written copy of a Christmas song; such as Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer or Frosty the Snowman. Students will work together to highlight the nouns for their Christmas song. Students list the nouns and identifies the number of syllables for each noun. After, they decide as a group on the new nouns, ensuring each noun has the same amount of syllables. As well, all common nouns will be replaced with the same noun.

One member of the group rewrites the song and inputs the new noun.

Day 2

Teach a mini lesson on verbs. Use the same procedures as nouns to identify the verbs and the same procedure to replace each verb in the song. The new Christmas song will have new nouns and verbs. Nouns and verbs must make sense in the new song. Students must have their song flow from one verse to the next. As well, all common verbs will be replaced with the same verb.

Day 3

Teach a mini lesson on adjectives. Use the same procedures as nouns to identify the adjectives and the same procedure to replace each adjective in the song. As well, all common adjectives will be replaced with the same adjective. This is the final alteration to the Christmas song.

Engage students with a creative parts of speech lesson plan that does not involve multiple photocopies. Wake up your students with a fun lesson that will teach them about nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
