Making foam board puzzles are a fun activity for the family. The activity allows families to spend time together creating and solving the different puzzles.

Spending time with family is priceless as memories last a lifetime. Design a puzzle from a favourite photograph or draw a picture.

Image Selection

Browse through print and digital images. Best images to use are focused with a great deal of detail. The more detail the better as it allows the child a base for choosing the appropriate puzzle piece. Once the photo is selected, crop and enhance the photo. Red eye can be removed with many photo software. As well, the image can be enlarged. When enlarging ensure the photo is still a clean crisp image as enlarging may distort or make it blurry.

As well, the child and parent can create a picture with crayons and paper. Child can draw a picture of his favourite memory or create an abstract pattern. For the puzzle photographs or hand drawn pictures are great to use for jigsaws.

Another option is for the child and parent to create an image directly onto the foam board. If this option is used it is best to do a few sample ideas on paper before drawing on the foam board.

Jigsaw Puzzle Patterns

Glue the finished image to foam bristol board. Glue the photo with craft glue and let dry. Once dry, brush with a clear coat of varnish. The varnish will allow the puzzle pieces to last longer. Wait for the varnish to dry before creating a puzzle pattern on the image.

Print a puzzle pattern piece from the Web or create create a pattern template free hand. The template must be the same size as the picture. Once the pattern pieces are created glue the sheet of paper to the backside of the foam board.

Next, cut out the foam pieces with an utility knife. Utility knife gives the cleanest cut but heavy duty scissors can be used as well. Once all the pieces are cut out, smooth the edges with a nail file. Place the puzzle pieces together to ensure a good fit. After paint clear varnish on the sides of the puzzle pieces and let dry.

Finishing Touches

After the puzzle is complete it is time to package the finished product. Place the puzzle pieces in a clear container with a lid. On the lid, paste a smaller picture of the image for reference. As well, the puzzle pieces can be stored in a clear sealable bag with the image taped to the inside of the bag. Last step is to solve the puzzle.

Creating and designing a puzzle is a fun activity for the family. It allows a moment to be captured and it brings the family together each time they resolve the puzzle.
